In the Year of the Lord Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Seven (1787), a Christian in Goa, Pinto, raised the banner of revolt against the Oppression of Portuguese rule. He was among the first Freedom Fighters of this land. In other parts of India, revolutionaries and social activists rebelled against other oppressors. The most sustained and powerful struggle was against the oppression of caste. In what are now the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh many turned in vast numbers to the liberating message of Jesus Christ.

Status of Dalit Rights

On 26th January 1950, India entered into a world of contradictions between its democratic politics and its feudal economic and social structure. Today, those same contradictions continue unabated. Instead of repudiating the outdated law of Varnashram Dharma, 52 years of democracy have only served to prove that caste hierarchy is still the law of the land, and not the democratic and socialistic principles enshrined in our Constitution.
