Attack in Hyderabad: Pastor’s condition serious, five arrested

From our correspondent

A birthday, a sweet, joyous occasion, is marred by miscreants, who gate-crash into the venue and beat up everyone present there with rods and chains, leaving the birthday child shocked and wounded. Often this happens in the reel world. But what happened at Vanastalipuram in Hyderabad on 28 February 2006 was not only real but much worse!

Pastor Jacob, his wife Mary and their two daughters Kumari and Sweety were special guests at the birthday celebration of 13-year-old Anusha, daughter of Lingamurthy at his residence in Srinilaya Colony under Vanasthalipuram Police Station limits. While they were praying, a group of people wearing masks entered the house and started to beat up the Pastor with rods and chains. When his wife and daughters tried to stop them, they were also attacked badly. The birthday girl Anusha was also severely attacked and her hand was smashed between the doors.

The attackers left the venue with a warning to the Pastor that he would be killed if he continued to preach. On hearing of the incident, the police arrived on the spot and shifted the victims to a nursing home nearby. The police subsequently arrested Dasharath Goud, Jagan, Rajinikanth, J Srinivas and Shanker of Naadargull. The police are on the look-out for the rest of culprits.

The All India Christian Council (aicc) sent a fact-finding team headed by Rev Satyam Yellasari, State Coordinator to enquire into the attack. According to the team, t he Pastor’s condition continues to be serious.  His family is so chocked that they do not want to go back to their house.

It was not the first time that the Pastor suffered attacks. He was attacked a few times in the recent past. When the Bonalu celebration was going on, a few unknown people came to the pastor warning him not to preach. The Pastor took the incident lightly and continued to preach. A little later on 18 th February, the same group of people wearing masks attacked the pastor while he was travelling and left him severely wounded, with a warning that he would be killed if he continued to preach.

The Pastor reported the incident to the police and thought that no one would disturb him anymore.  The Pastor and his family were attacked again for preaching in the area. Pastor Jocab is from Kothapalli village in West Godawari district in Andhra Pradesh.  Earlier he served as a pastor in Jeedimetla of Hyderabad for 17 years.
