From our correspondent

More than 200 members of 31 Dalit families belonging to Farmana village in Sonepat district in Haryana have been rendered refugees in their own native land following alleged attacks by Upper Castes on their locality of the same village.

Dalit elders alleged they had to flee their village in Kharkhauda sub-division to save their lives because the miscreants were armed. They spent the night camping at various temples, dharamshalas and schools in and around Khokhrakot in Rohtak.

Chanderbhan, one of those who fled, alleged that a group of Upper Caste people from the village were eying the land on which they had been living for decades in pucca houses. He said Upper Caste people, led by Farmana sarpanch Sunil, threatened residents of the Dalit 'basti' on 0n 14 February 2006 asking them to vacate the land which the miscreants claimed belonged to a temple.
