Position Paper

The All India Christian Council (aicc) is a nation-wide alliance of Christian denominations, mission agencies, institutions, federations, NGOs and Christian lay leaders who have lived and worked side by side through several decades.

The formation of aicc was the result of a spontaneous response from national denominations, churches and institutions to establish an entity to protect and serve the interest of the Christian community in the face of ongoing persecution, attacks and calumny against Christians nationwide.

The idea from the beginning was to be proactive and not just reactive in regards to the interests of the Christian community and other minorities, as well as those of dalits, tribals and backward communities. It was also an attempt to get committed and talented people to put their energies into safeguarding the interests of the Church and its activities through all constitutional means. The tremendous interest through letters and telephone calls from hundreds of churches and organizations from all parts of India, affirming the formation of aicc, became a significant sign for us to move forward. The aicc now represents a vast and increasing constituency of denominations, churches, missions, institutions and key leaders.

Commitments:
The aicc is built around two commitments:
  1. The commitment to the unique person of the Lord Jesus Christ and his compassion to a needy humanity.
  2. The commitment to secular, pluralistic and democratic India.
The council will maintain its integrity in these two areas.

Missions Perspective:
Comprising the largest alliance in the nation of Church bodies and missions that are actively carrying out Christ's sacrificial mission, the aicc is fully committed to the Church's mission of demonstrating the love of Christ in society through Word and deed. The aicc supports the freedom of conscience and India's pluralistic culture, encouraging Christ's loving mission and defending the right of the Indian Christian to practice his faith. The Council recognizes the right to practice one's faith as also a responsibility to respect the freedom of conscience of people following other faiths.

Composition and Affiliations:
  • The fast growing aicc membership now includes over 2,500 associations, federations, denominations, institutions, NGOs and mission agencies.

  • The aicc allies and works together with major ecclesiastical bodies in the country, crossing denominational boundaries in its perspectives, leadership, work and commitment.
